In our era where social media has taken over our lives, we seemed to forget the joys of receiving a love note or a card in the mail on Valentine’s Day. We forget the feeling of receiving a Valentine’s note from a secret admirer. Let me take you back to the days, to that love letter you hold to your heart after you had finished reading it. Remember those types of love note that you keep in your keepsake box? 🤔💌Yes, those.
In 1415, at 21 years old, Charles, the Duke of Orléans fought in the Battle of Agincourt. He was captured and imprisoned in the Tower of London away from his young wife. He was devastated by their separation and thus wrote a letter to her. History’s Oldest-Known Valentine Was Written in Prison – HISTORY documented the letter as the oldest valentine’s letter. The “valentine” poem reads:
My very gentle Valentine,
Since for me you were born too soon,
And I for you was born too late.
God forgives him who has estranged
Me from you for the whole year.
I am already sick of love,
My very gentle Valentine.
Now, imagine a young wife received this poem from a husband she might never see again. The words in the poem encapsulated a longing desire for her love. Those are the letters you hold to your heart and keep in your treasure box. We do not get those letters anymore. We cut and paste and forward the same message someone sent us. We fail to personalize our messages to the ones we professed we love on Valentine’s Day. Be original and honest in the message you send today. Tell the person how you really feel about him/her.
Psst! Sneak a note in his/her pocket of the coat he/she will wear later. Be creative! It will be cherished and remembered always and get placed in the treasure box.
Happy Valentine’s Day, my subscribers/readers.
